Though originally a primary classroom teacher, over the past 5 years I’ve worked as a teacher librarian in secondary schools. In January of this year I commenced a part-time position at Toorak College in Mt Eliza, a beach side suburb around an hour from the city. We have a beautiful light and spacious library, catering for girls in Years 5 through to 12.
I enjoy using Web 2.0 tools and have had a range of experiences prompted by a previous PLN and professional development programs I’ve participated in. Several years ago I created a Ning (an online social network), for students and teachers to share their reading experiences. I have also created Wikis, a blog (also called 72 derwents, to share about my love of stitching), and used other tools such as Voicethread, Wordle and Jing. I have discovered that using these tools is generally not too difficult, however you do need to be keen to have a go and prepared to devote a reasonable amount of time to learning how a tool works.
At times I’ve been overwhelmed by the vast possibilities that exist. Hopefully the PLN will provide opportunity for me to hear about tools that are worthwhile and have application to various classroom settings. Currently I’m building a Libguide for LOTE teachers, with links to Web 2.0 tools that will be especially useful for the teaching and learning of LOTE.
Beginning something new is often a challenge in an already busy life. However I am optimistic that the PLN will be a worthwhile investment of my PD time.
